Built From Lived Experience and the Belief That Communities Can Respond Better
UnSilenced: Battle Creek Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition is a survivor-led, community-powered coalition serving Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and communities across Michigan and beyond.
We bring survivors, healthcare and behavioral-health professionals, law enforcement, educators, social-service providers, faith communities, advocates, and community members to the same table. Together, we work to improve recognition, strengthen responses, build meaningful partnerships, and create safer pathways to support.
Our work is grounded in the understanding that people are more than a diagnosis, behavior, criminal record, crisis, or circumstance. Compassionate responses begin when we look beyond what is immediately visible and seek to understand the person and story underneath.
WHO WE ARE
WHY UNSILENCED WAS CREATED
A Voice Does Not Begin to Matter Only When Someone Finally Listens.
UnSilenced was created from lived experience and from knowing what it feels like to need help while the systems around you fail to recognize what is happening.
For too long, trafficking survivors have been labeled by what others could see: runaway, difficult, noncompliant, addicted, criminal, unstable, or unwilling to accept help. Those labels can hide grooming, coercion, fear, trauma bonds, unmet needs, and the complicated ways people survive exploitation.
Founder Robin Bolz did not suddenly find her voice as an adult. Her voice had always been there. UnSilenced grew from the determination to help create communities and systems that listen sooner, look deeper, and respond with greater understanding.

Today, pain has been transformed into purpose through education, survivor support, community collaboration, advocacy, and the belief that lived experience can help change the way others are recognized and supported.

We educate professionals and communities, amplify survivor voices, connect individuals with support, and advocate for systems that respond with dignity, compassion, and understanding.

We envision communities where trafficking and exploitation are recognized early, survivors are believed and supported without judgment, and every system they encounter is prepared to respond without causing additional harm.
We seek a future where survivor voices help shape education, services, professional practice, policy, and meaningful community change.

Survivor leadership keeps our work connected to the realities of trafficking, exploitation, trauma, and the barriers people face when attempting to seek help. It challenges systems to move beyond assumptions and listen to what survivors have long been communicating.
Professional knowledge contributes clinical understanding, legal expertise, crisis-response skills, resources, research, policy experience, and connections to systems that can support meaningful change.
UnSilenced does not ask one perspective to replace another. We create opportunities for survivors and multidisciplinary professionals to learn from one another, identify gaps, and build responses that are informed, practical, compassionate, and grounded in human dignity.
Our guiding question: What might we understand differently if we look beyond the presenting behavior and listen to the whole story?
Helping Professionals Look Beyond What Is Written in the Chart
UnSilenced develops survivor-informed education for healthcare, behavioral health, peer support, law enforcement, educators, social services, and other multidisciplinary professionals.
The Beyond Series begins with Beyond the Chart, a recognized training model that helps professionals identify trafficking concerns, understand trauma-related behaviors, reduce harmful assumptions, and respond to the person behind the presenting crisis.
The series continues to grow through specialized models designed for the different professionals and systems survivors may encounter.
Continuing-Education Recognition
Beyond the Chart has received continuing-education approval through WMed and Michigan’s peer-support continuing-education system.
CONNECTED THROUGH COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
Our Organizational Relationship
UnSilenced operates in partnership with the Kalamazoo Area Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This relationship provides nonprofit oversight and strengthens regional collaboration while allowing UnSilenced to maintain its distinct survivor-led identity and focus on Battle Creek and surrounding communities.
Together, the coalitions expand education, build partnerships, support survivor-centered efforts, and help communities across Southwest Michigan develop a more coordinated response to human trafficking.

Support and Comfort Companion
Sammy reminds us that comfort, grounding, and connection can sometimes begin without words. His gentle presence reflects an important part of UnSilenced’s approach: people deserve spaces where they can breathe, feel welcomed, and experience care without judgment.
While Sammy is not a trained service animal or therapy dog, he is a deeply loved companion and a meaningful part of the UnSilenced story.
